In your personal development, are you more of a “personal work through therapy” type, or “personal work through meditation” type? More often than not, when I work with people they fall into one of these two types… and it is often unconscious. This leads to a lot of confusion about the nature of personal development work which is problematic. And the fact is that both the therapeutic AND the meditative approaches are necessary for an integrated development.
There’s a well-known teaching from the Buddha of “The 2 Darts”. This teaching points to the two ways that you experience pain and suffering in your life. The 1st dart is when you get “hit” by something in life that causes pain and suffering. The 1st type of darts happen in life and to a certain extent, they are impossible to avoid. The 2nd type of dart is entirely different.

My parents divorced when I was 2. Shortly after the split, my late father, Milton Kessler, grew out his hair and let his hippy flag fly. Then in 1969, he was busted for marijuana possession. This was Texas and back in the day possession meant a minimum of 5 years of hard time in prison. So my dad jumped bail and fled to Canada where he lived for the next 12 years building a successful Bagel Bakery business.
